International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

Today, as we observe the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), it is crucial to amplify conversations around the devastating consequences of this harmful practice. FGM is a severe violation of human rights, affecting millions of girls and women worldwide. It is a deeply entrenched cultural practice that involves the partial or total removal of external female genitalia or other forms of injury to female genital organs for non-medical reasons. Often performed on young girls between infancy and age 15, FGM strips them of their rights to health, security, and dignity, as emphasized by UNICEF.

The effects of FGM are severe and far-reaching, impacting victims physically, emotionally, and psychologically. One of the most immediate consequences is the excruciating pain and trauma suffered during and after the procedure, often performed under unsafe and unhygienic conditions. The risk of infections, excessive bleeding, and complications during childbirth further endangers the lives of affected women. Many survivors also endure long-term sexual and reproductive health problems, including painful intercourse and infertility, which significantly affect their well-being and relationships.

Beyond the physical suffering, FGM inflicts deep psychological distress, leading to anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. Many survivors struggle with emotional scars for the rest of their lives, battling the psychological burden of a practice that was imposed on them against their will. The fear and trauma associated with FGM often create lifelong mental health challenges, making it imperative for societies to acknowledge and address this crisis.

To eradicate FGM, collective action is essential. Raising awareness, advocating for legal enforcement, and engaging with communities to challenge harmful traditions are critical steps toward ending this violation of human rights. Governments, healthcare professionals, educators, and activists must work together to protect young girls and women from this practice, support survivors, and push for change at every level.

The NdiAssam Foundation stands firmly against FGM and calls on individuals, communities, and organizations worldwide to unite in protecting the rights, dignity, and well-being of girls and women. It is only through collective advocacy, education, and policy reform that we can eliminate this practice and ensure a safer, healthier future for all. Let us speak out, take action, and commit to ending FGM once and for all.
